Terminology
Woundsabscess - a localized collection of pus surrounded by inflamed tissue
avascular - having few or no blood vessels approximated - located close together clean (wound) - free from disease or infectious agents closed (wound edges) - covered with unbroken skin dead space - a space left in the body as the result of a surgical procedure; an actual or potential cavity remaining after the closure of an incision and not obliterative by operative technique debride - to cleanse by debridement debridement - the usually surgical removal of lacerated, devitalized, or contaminated tissue dehiscence - the parting of the sutured lips of a surgical wound; the bursting open of a surgically closed wound demarcate - to set apart clearly or distinctly as if by definite terms or boundaries dirty - contaminated with infecting organisms dry - marked by absence or scantiness or secretions, effusions, or other forms of moisture eshcar - a hard crust or scab, as from a burn exudate - exuded matter; especially: the material composed of serum, fibrin, and white blood cells that escapes from blood vessels into a superficial lesion or area of inflammation full thickness - damage extends below the epidermis and dermis (all layers of the skin) into the subcutaneous tissue or beyond (into muscle, bones, tendons, etc.) granulation tissue - tissue made up of granulations that temporarily replaces lost tissue in a wound; tissue formed in ulcers and in early wound healing and repair, composed largely of newly growing capillaries and so called from its irregular surface in open wounds; proud flesh malodorous - bad smelling; having an unpleasant or offensive odor necrosis - death of living tissue; death of a portion of tissue deferentially affect by local injury (as loss of blood supply, corrosion, burning, or the local lesion of a disease) partial thickness - wound is confined to the skin layers; damage does not penetrate below the dermis and may be limited to the epidermal layers only. purulent - containing, consisting of,or being pus; of, relating to, or containing pus slough - dead tissue separating from living tissue; a mass of dead tissue separating from an ulcer tunneling - a bodily channel serosanguinous - containing or consisting of both blood and serous fluid wet - marked by the presence or abundance of fluid (as secretions or effusions) wick - to absorb or drain (as fluid or moisture) like a wick - often used with away *There is another vocabulary list in the education binder
